Drawing Inspiration From Famous Stained Glass Windows

Stained glass windows are what some consider to be windows that look upon the face of God. From gothic times to modern times, these beautiful windows have been used in many different cathedrals, to not only provide beauty, but also to help communicate the biblical scriptures that many may not have been able to read or understand. Some of the most famous windows provide beauty far beyond the human imagination.

One of the most famous windows in the world can be found in the Notre Dame Cathedral, in Paris, France. The north rose window was made by Jean de Chelles. The scene that is depicted is about the Virgin Mary and Jesus. They are the center of the huge masterpiece and are surrounded by both prophets and many Old Testament kings and high priests and patriarchs of the Gothic era. Many Gothic windows were lost for various reasons, but the north rose window of Notre Dame has survived.

Other famous stained glass windows can be found in various places. Many can be located in famous cathedrals including England’s Canterbury and St. Andrew’s in Sydney, Australia. However, even shrines can have unbelievably beautiful, colored glass windows. One such shrine is the Nasir al-Mulk mosque in Shiraz, Iran. The glasswork is very vivid in color, and when the light hits it, the images are extraordinary. Another famous cathedral that contains beautiful windows is St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. Works of art that can take your breath away are truly something to behold.

Stained glass windows are some of the most beautiful and unique works of art. Created from human imagination, but no doubt spiritually inspired. No matter where a person goes, they can usually find these gems. Famous windows are wonderful to view, but even the smallest of churches have exquisite windows that local artisans have produced. However, the famous windows are beyond beautiful, and if one has the opportunity to travel the world, then they should make a point of visiting the buildings where they are ensconced.
